Nottingham Forest secured their place in next season’s Premier League after Elliot Anderson scored a dramatic late equaliser against his former club Newcastle United at the City Ground. The result, combined with West Ham United’s defeat to Arsenal later on Sunday, officially guaranteed Forest’s survival and completed an impressive turnaround under manager Vitor Pereira.
The midfielder, who swapped Newcastle for Forest two years ago in a £35 million move, produced the decisive moment in the closing stages. With only minutes remaining, Anderson latched onto a clever short pass from James McAtee before firing beyond Nick Pope from close range. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters and lifted Forest seven points above the relegation places.
For Pereira, who took charge in February following Sean Dyche’s departure, the result marked a huge achievement after arriving during a difficult period for the club. Forest showed resilience despite playing their third match in a demanding week and once again proved their fighting spirit in front of their home crowd.
Newcastle had looked on course for victory after Harvey Barnes gave the visitors the lead with 16 minutes left. Barnes raced onto Jacob Ramsey’s through ball before holding off Morato and calmly finding the net. At that stage, the goal briefly pushed Eddie Howe’s side up to ninth place and kept their slim hopes of European qualification alive.
However, Newcastle’s struggles to protect leads returned once more. The Magpies have now dropped 27 points from winning positions this season, a statistic that perfectly reflects a frustrating league campaign. After finishing fifth and winning the Carabao Cup last year, this season has fallen well below expectations.
The visitors created enough opportunities to finish the contest earlier. William Osula rattled the crossbar with a free kick while Matz Sels was forced into action after a powerful effort from Bruno Guimaraes. At the other end, Pope denied Taiwo Awoniyi with an important save before Forest eventually found their breakthrough.
Anderson’s performance was especially emotional as he dedicated his goal to his late mother, Helen, by pointing towards the sky in celebration. The 23 year old has developed into one of the league’s standout midfielders since arriving in Nottingham and is now attracting interest from clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City.
Ironically, it was Newcastle supporters once singing Anderson’s name, but this time the Forest fans were celebrating the man who may have saved their season.
