Lucknow Super Giants delivered one of their strongest performances of the season as they defeated Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets at the Ekana Stadium, damaging Chennai’s hopes of reaching the IPL playoffs. The defeat pushed CSK down from fifth to sixth place in the standings, while Rajasthan Royals moved ahead on net run rate despite having played one match fewer.
The chase of 188 looked challenging on a surface that offered bounce and grip, but Mitchell Marsh completely changed the direction of the game with a brutal counterattack at the top. The Australian batter hammered 90 runs from only 38 deliveries and gave Chennai’s bowlers no breathing space during the powerplay. Lucknow raced to 86 in the first six overs, with Marsh contributing 56 of those runs alone.
From the beginning, Marsh looked determined to dominate. Mukesh Choudhary was welcomed with aggressive strokeplay, while Anshul Kamboj struggled badly once Marsh created room and attacked through the off side. Kamboj’s fifth over became a nightmare as Marsh smashed four sixes and a boundary in a stunning display of clean hitting. Even debutant Spencer Johnson was unable to slow him down as the left arm quick conceded several boundaries in a costly over.
While Marsh played the aggressor’s role, Josh Inglis quietly supported him from the other end. Inglis scored 36 from 32 balls and focused mainly on rotating strike while his partner dismantled the bowling attack. Their opening stand of 135 virtually ended the contest before Chennai managed a breakthrough.
CSK finally removed Inglis in the 12th over when Mukesh used a slower delivery cleverly. Marsh’s innings ended in unfortunate fashion soon after when a deflection from Mukesh onto the stumps caught him short at the non striker’s end. He missed a deserved century by just ten runs.
Nicholas Pooran ensured there would be no late drama. The West Indian batter finished the chase emphatically with four consecutive sixes against Kamboj, sealing victory with 20 balls remaining. Kamboj, who had been Chennai’s most reliable bowler this season, finished with expensive figures of 63 runs from only 2.4 overs.
Earlier, Chennai posted 187 after recovering from a shaky beginning. Akash Singh starred for Lucknow with outstanding figures of 3 for 26 in his first appearance of the campaign. Playing against his former side, the left arm pacer consistently hit hard lengths and troubled the CSK top order with extra bounce. His dismissals of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel left Chennai struggling at 37 for 2 inside the powerplay.
Youngster Kartik Sharma then revived the innings with an impressive 71 from 42 deliveries. The rookie displayed confidence against both spin and pace, striking boundaries all around the ground. His attacking approach against Shahbaz Ahmed and Mayank Yadav highlighted his wide range of shots and fearless mindset.
Shivam Dube provided late momentum with an unbeaten 32 from 16 balls. He accelerated brilliantly at the death overs, helping Chennai finish with a competitive total after Lucknow had controlled most of the innings.
In the end, however, Marsh’s explosive batting proved too powerful, giving Lucknow only their fourth victory of the season while leaving Chennai with serious concerns in the playoff race.
