Arnold Allen delivered one of his most complete performances in recent years as he secured a convincing unanimous decision victory over Melquizael Costa in the UFC Vegas 117 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The English featherweight contender controlled the contest from the opening round and never allowed Costa to build momentum across the five round battle. Judges scored the matchup 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46 in Allen’s favour after a technically sharp and disciplined display.
Allen looked composed throughout the evening, using his striking accuracy and grappling ability to dictate the pace. His straight left hand repeatedly found the target and caused problems for Costa, who struggled to deal with the timing and movement of the experienced British fighter. Alongside his stand up success, Allen showcased impressive wrestling skills by completing all seven of his takedown attempts during the fight.
Costa entered the headline bout with plenty of confidence after putting together six consecutive victories. The Brazilian had built strong momentum in the division with wins against respected names such as Andre Fili and Dan Ige. However, Allen’s experience against elite competition proved to be a major advantage once the cage door closed.
Over the last few years, Allen has shared the octagon with some of the featherweight division’s toughest opponents, including Max Holloway, Movsar Evloev, and Jean Silva. Although results had not always gone his way recently, the level of opposition appeared to sharpen his approach and preparation heading into this matchup.
