Newcastle United delivered a damaging blow to West Ham’s survival hopes with a convincing 3 1 victory at St James’ Park, leaving the London club staring at relegation from the Premier League.
The Magpies produced an energetic display in front of their home supporters, who were also saying goodbye to club captain Kieran Trippier during his final appearance on Tyneside. Young striker Will Osula emerged as the star of the evening, scoring twice in an impressive attacking performance.
Newcastle wasted little time taking control of the contest. Their midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Ramsey dictated possession early, forcing West Ham onto the back foot. Osula tested the visitors first with an effort that deflected wide before the breakthrough arrived in the 15th minute.
Harvey Barnes intercepted a poor pass from goalkeeper Mads Hermansen before charging forward and delivering a cross for Nick Woltemade, who calmly finished for his first league strike since December.
The home side doubled their advantage only four minutes later through a smooth attacking move involving Trippier, Barnes, Guimaraes and Ramsey. Osula burst through the defence, outpaced Axel Disasi and finished confidently beyond Hermansen.
West Ham looked overwhelmed defensively, prompting manager Nuno Espirito Santo to make a tactical change before the half hour mark. Jean Clair Todibo was sacrificed as Taty Castellanos entered the pitch, with the visitors switching to a back four in an attempt to regain stability.
The adjustment improved West Ham slightly, and Castellanos nearly pulled one back when Nick Pope reacted sharply to deny his first time strike. Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen also began creating problems in wide areas, but Newcastle still looked dangerous whenever they moved forward.
After the interval, the visitors showed greater determination but lacked the finishing touch needed to turn momentum into goals. Newcastle remained threatening on the counter and eventually extended their lead with 25 minutes remaining.
Joe Willock won possession from Pablo before combining brilliantly with Osula, who completed his brace from close range to make it 3 0.
Castellanos responded with a superb first time finish moments later and later rattled the crossbar, but West Ham could not complete a comeback.
The defeat leaves the Hammers dangerously close to relegation, with their fate now depending heavily on results elsewhere.
