Sri Lanka enjoyed a memorable day in Tashkent after both the men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams captured championship honours at the inaugural Central and South Asia CASA 7s Tournament.
The women’s side produced a commanding display in the final against Kazakhstan, sealing a convincing 27 nil victory to lift the title. From the opening whistle, the Sri Lankan outfit controlled possession, attacked with confidence, and defended with great discipline. Kazakhstan struggled to respond as the Lankan players dominated every area of the field.
The triumph highlighted the steady rise of women’s rugby in Sri Lanka. Their pace, teamwork, and finishing ability stood out throughout the tournament, and the final performance confirmed their status as deserved champions.
Earlier in the day, the Sri Lankan men’s team also delivered an outstanding performance by defeating regional rivals India 31 to 10 in the final. The side played with intensity and precision, creating scoring chances through quick passing and powerful runs. India attempted to stay in the contest, but Sri Lanka maintained control and continued to pile on points.
The men’s squad showed excellent composure under pressure and demonstrated why they were among the strongest teams in the competition. Their attacking rhythm and defensive organization proved too much for the opposition.
Winning both finals marked a historic achievement for Sri Lankan rugby at the newly introduced CASA 7s event. The double success in Uzbekistan will undoubtedly boost confidence for future international tournaments and reflects the growing strength of rugby sevens in the country.
Supporters back home will now hope this impressive performance becomes the beginning of even greater achievements on the international stage.
