Gujarat Titans delivered a commanding performance in Ahmedabad on Thursday night, brushing aside Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs to guarantee a top two finish in the IPL standings. The result also officially ended Chennai’s fading hopes of reaching the playoffs after a disappointing campaign.
Batting first on a lively red soil wicket that offered pace and bounce, Gujarat approached the innings with attacking intent from the start. Captain Shubman Gill led the charge with a blazing half century that came in only 23 deliveries. His aggressive stroke play gave the home side the perfect launchpad while B Sai Sudharsan settled in calmly before accelerating later in the innings.
Gill eventually departed for 64, but not before sharing another impressive opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan. The young left hander continued his remarkable consistency by registering his fifth straight IPL fifty and reclaiming the Orange Cap during his superb knock of 84 from 53 balls.
Once Gill was dismissed, Jos Buttler took complete control in the closing overs. The English batter attacked immediately and punished the Chennai bowlers with clean striking all around the ground. His unbeaten 57 from just 27 deliveries pushed Gujarat to a massive total of 229.
Among the Chennai bowlers, Gurjapneet Singh stood out with disciplined variations despite receiving little support from the other end.
Chasing 230 was always going to require a strong start, but Chennai collapsed almost instantly. Mohammed Siraj made a huge impact with the new ball, removing key wickets and breaking the backbone of the batting lineup. Within seven overs, Chennai had already lost five batters and the match was slipping away quickly.
Shivam Dube briefly entertained the crowd with a counter attacking innings, smashing 47 from only 17 balls. He struck several towering boundaries and momentarily gave Chennai a small spark of hope. However, his dismissal proved decisive.
Rashid Khan then tightened Gujarat’s grip with a brilliant spell of 3 for 18 as Chennai folded in the 14th over. Gill also contributed in the field with an outstanding running catch and a sharp direct hit.
The emphatic victory confirmed Gujarat’s place among the league’s top two teams, while Chennai were left to reflect on a season filled with inconsistency and missed opportunities.
