It was one of the strangest nights of the IPL 2026 season. Sunrisers Hyderabad walked away with a commanding victory, yet could not climb into the top two. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru suffered a crushing defeat but still secured the number one position on the points table.
The drama unfolded in Hyderabad where SRH produced a batting masterclass to post a massive 255 for 4. Explosive half centuries from Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan powered the hosts to one of their highest totals of the campaign. However, SRH needed to beat RCB by at least 90 runs to break into the top two positions.
RCB entered the chase with qualification calculations firmly in mind. The target itself looked impossible, but avoiding a heavy collapse became the priority. The aggressive start from Venkatesh Iyer quickly settled nerves. The left hander smashed 44 from only 19 deliveries and attacked the bowling from the very beginning, taking apart both pace and spin during the powerplay.
Although Virat Kohli failed to make an impact with the bat, valuable contributions from Devdutt Padikkal and skipper Rajat Patidar kept RCB safely above the danger mark. Patidar played a composed knock of 56 from 39 balls while Krunal Pandya remained unbeaten on 41 as RCB finished on 200 for 4.
Despite the defeat, that total was enough to guarantee a top two finish and eventually push RCB to the top of the standings on net run rate ahead of Gujarat Titans.
Earlier in the evening, SRH batters punished a sloppy RCB fielding display. Abhishek Sharma was dropped three times during the powerplay and made the visitors pay heavily. His fearless stroke play gave Hyderabad early momentum before Kishan and Klaasen took complete control through the middle overs.
Kishan continued his remarkable record against RCB with a fluent 79 from 46 deliveries, mixing powerful pulls with elegant sweeps. Klaasen then produced another brutal finish, hammering 52 while becoming the first batter to cross 600 runs in a T20 tournament while batting at number four or lower.
A late cameo from Nitish Kumar Reddy pushed SRH beyond the 250 mark and left experienced bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar wicketless on a forgettable night.
In the end, SRH earned the win, but RCB celebrated the bigger reward.
