Tottenham Hotspur are moving quickly in their search for stability, with talks progressing to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach. The Italian manager, previously in charge at Brighton, is now open to taking the role after earlier planning to wait until the summer.
Spurs currently sit just one point above the relegation zone with only seven games remaining. Following the departure of Igor Tudor after a difficult spell of seven matches in 44 days, the club is eager to make a permanent appointment as soon as possible. Reports suggest Tottenham have already offered De Zerbi a five year contract, highlighting their long term vision despite the immediate pressure.
De Zerbi was already on Tottenham’s shortlist for a summer appointment. However, the club has accelerated its plans due to the current crisis. Discussions began earlier this week, and Spurs are hopeful of finalising the deal before players return from international duty.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood believes De Zerbi could be a strong long term choice, but questions whether this is the right moment for his arrival.
“I like him, I really do. I like his personality,” Sherwood said. “I said many months ago that he would be the man for Tottenham. He plays the kind of football the fans want to see. It is open and attacking.”
However, Sherwood also raised concerns about the timing.
“This is not the moment for that style. Right now they need a safe pair of hands. De Zerbi is far from that. His teams can be open and sometimes get exposed, and Tottenham cannot afford that in a relegation fight.”
He also questioned the club’s earlier decisions.
“He wanted to take a break after Marseille in February, but why did Spurs not bring him in then? Why not before Igor Tudor? If they had, he would have had more time and I would have been confident he could keep them up.”
With time running out, Tottenham must now decide if De Zerbi is the man to guide them to safety and beyond.
