Shreyas Iyer Leads Clinical Chase as PBKS Outclass CSK

Punjab Kings continued their impressive start to TATA IPL 2026 with a commanding five wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in a high scoring encounter at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

After winning the toss, Punjab opted to bowl first but were put under early pressure as Chennai recovered strongly from an early setback. Sanju Samson departed cheaply for 7, but skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and young Ayush Mhatre steadied the innings with a crucial partnership of 96 runs off just 55 balls.

Mhatre emerged as the standout performer during the partnership, displaying remarkable composure for his age. The 18 year old scored a fluent 73 off 43 balls, registering the third highest IPL score by a batter before turning 19. Gaikwad supported him well with a steady 28 off 22 balls before falling to Yuzvendra Chahal.

Despite losing both set batters in quick succession, Chennai maintained their attacking momentum. Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 45 off 27 balls while Sarfaraz Khan played a blistering cameo of 32 off just 12 deliveries. Their late surge powered CSK to a formidable total of 209 for 5, with 99 runs coming in the final overs.

Chahal was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab with an economical spell, while Vijaykumar Vyshak claimed two important wickets.

In response, Punjab Kings came out firing. Young opener Priyansh Arya set the tone with an explosive 39 off just 11 balls, smashing boundaries at will and taking the game away early. Punjab raced to 61 for 1 in just over four overs before Arya was dismissed by Matt Henry.

Prabhsimran Singh added stability with 43 off 34 balls, while Cooper Connolly chipped in with a quick 38. Skipper Shreyas Iyer then played a crucial knock of 50 off 29 balls, guiding the chase with control and intent.

Though CSK briefly fought back with timely wickets, Punjab remained composed. Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh ensured there were no late hiccups, sealing the win with five wickets in hand and 17 balls remaining.

Priyansh Arya was named Player of the Match for his explosive start, as Punjab Kings secured their second consecutive win while Chennai Super Kings are still searching for their first victory of the season.
