Sri Lanka Rugby Unveils Captaincy Duo for 2026 Challenges

Sri Lanka Rugby has ushered in a new chapter for the national 15s outfit with the appointment of Lasindu Karunathilake as captain and Tharindu Chathuranga as vice-captain. The announcement, made on April 16, signals a forward-thinking approach as the Tuskers prepare for a demanding international schedule in 2026.

Sri Lanka’s calendar is packed with high-level competition, including two matches against the visiting New Zealand Under 85kg side and a crucial campaign in the Asia Rugby Championship. With tougher opposition on the horizon, leadership on and off the field will play a defining role.

Karunathilake brings a wealth of experience and a strong leadership pedigree. His credentials date back to his school days when he guided Science College to a memorable President’s Trophy success in 2015. Since joining CR and FC, he has grown into a dependable forward, playing a key role in their recent successes. His influence was evident during the latest domestic season, where he led the club to an impressive double, securing both the Maliban Inter-Club Rugby League title and the Clifford Cup, along with the overall local championship in the sevens circuit.

Chathuranga, meanwhile, has built his reputation through consistency and commitment. A product of Kingswood College, he has been a long-serving player for Kandy Sports Club. Known for his efficiency in breakdown situations and relentless work ethic, he earned the responsibility of leading his club in the 2025 to 2026 season. Under his guidance, Kandy finished second in the league and progressed to the semi-finals of the Clifford Cup.

Both players have been integral members of the national setup since 2024. They played a significant role when Sri Lanka secured the Asia Rugby Division 1 Championship, marking a return to the top tier of Asian rugby.

The newly appointed leadership duo will face their first assignment when Sri Lanka takes on the New Zealand Under 85kg team at Racecourse Grounds on April 25. It will be an early test of their ability to guide the side through a season filled with expectation and opportunity.
