A stunning display from teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not enough to secure victory for Rajasthan Royals, as Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a clinical batting performance to chase down 229 with remarkable composure.
Just days after being contained in a previous encounter, Sooryavanshi responded in emphatic fashion, delivering one of the most breathtaking innings of the season. The 15-year-old reached his century in just 36 deliveries and eventually scored 103 off 37 balls. His knock was filled with fearless stroke play, striking sixes at an extraordinary frequency, including five maximums within his first six balls faced. By the end of the powerplay, he had already raced to 51 from only 16 deliveries, registering yet another ultra-fast half century.
Despite his brilliance, the rest of the batting unit failed to match his tempo. While Sooryavanshi dominated, the remaining batters alongside extras contributed only 125 runs from 83 balls. Dhruv Jurel provided some support with a steady 51 off 35, and the pair shared a 112-run partnership for the second wicket. However, inconsistency from others, including a short stay from Riyan Parag, left Rajasthan with a total that looked competitive but far from secure given the conditions.
The bowling side initially found success through Jofra Archer, who removed Travis Head early with a sharp delivery after nearly creating a chance off the first ball. However, that breakthrough only triggered a powerful counterattack.
Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan took control of the chase with a fearless approach. While neither batter individually matched the strike rate of Sooryavanshi, their combined effort proved decisive. The duo stitched together a match-defining 132-run stand in just 55 deliveries, dismantling the bowling attack with calculated aggression and clever shot selection.
There were moments where luck played a role in Hyderabad’s favour. A few dropped catches and edges that flew past fielders allowed both batters to continue their assault. Rajasthan struggled to execute their plans consistently, especially when offering width outside off stump, which was punished repeatedly.
After the partnership was finally broken by Donovan Ferreira, the required rate had already dropped to manageable levels. The middle order ensured there were no late hiccups, with Heinrich Klaasen adding 29 and Nitish Kumar Reddy contributing a quick 36 from 18 balls to take the team close.
Earlier in the innings, bowlers like Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga had done well to restrict damage outside of Sooryavanshi’s onslaught, particularly with accurate yorkers in the latter stages.
In the end, Hyderabad crossed the finish line with nine balls to spare, underlining the depth and balance in their batting lineup. The contest will be remembered for the young sensation’s extraordinary innings, but it also highlighted the importance of collective performance in high-scoring encounters.
