Kolkata Knight Riders delivered a commanding performance to snap Sunrisers Hyderabad’s five-game winning streak, thanks largely to the brilliance of their spin attack led by Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine. On a surface that offered less pace than usual, both bowlers used variation and control to dismantle Hyderabad’s strong batting lineup.
At one stage, Hyderabad looked set for a massive total, cruising at 105 for 1 inside nine overs. Travis Head was at his aggressive best, racing to a half century in just 22 deliveries, attacking both pace and spin with confidence. His early fireworks powered the team past 70 during the powerplay once again this season.
However, the turning point came when Chakravarthy struck to remove Head, triggering a dramatic collapse. Hyderabad’s aggressive approach backfired as wickets fell in clusters. Chakravarthy continued his impressive run of form, claiming multiple scalps and maintaining pressure through the middle overs.
Narine, meanwhile, added another milestone to his already decorated career by becoming only the third player overall and the first overseas bowler to reach 200 wickets in the Indian Premier League. His clever variations also removed key batters, including Ishan Kishan, restricting Hyderabad to 165 before the innings closed in the 19th over.
Chasing 166, Kolkata wasted no time asserting control. Finn Allen provided an explosive start, smashing boundaries at will and pushing the score to 71 in the powerplay. Although his quick cameo ended shortly after, the early momentum ensured there was no scoreboard pressure.
From there, Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi stitched together a steady partnership, focusing on strike rotation and calculated hitting. Raghuvanshi stood out with a composed 59 from 47 deliveries, anchoring the chase with maturity beyond his years.
Despite a couple of late wickets, Kolkata comfortably reached the target with seven wickets in hand and ten balls remaining. Rinku Singh played a finishing role to guide the team home.
This victory marks Kolkata’s third consecutive win, highlighting their growing confidence and balance, while Hyderabad will need to regroup quickly after a promising start was undone by spin mastery.
