Manchester City saw their Premier League ambitions dented after being forced to settle for a dramatic 3-3 result against Everton on Monday night.
Despite salvaging a point through a stoppage-time equaliser, the outcome could prove costly in the title race. City now sit five points behind Arsenal, with only one match in hand to close the gap.
The visitors looked in control during the opening period and deservedly went ahead just before the interval. Jérémy Doku produced a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning effort into the top corner from outside the box after a patient build-up.
However, the second half turned into chaos. Everton came out with renewed intensity and punished City’s defensive lapses. A costly mistake from Marc Guehi gifted the hosts a route back into the game, as substitute Thierno Barry capitalised to score the equaliser.
Momentum quickly swung in Everton’s favour. Jake O’Brien rose highest to head home from a corner, putting the home side ahead. Moments later, Barry grabbed his second goal after a deflection fell kindly into his path, completing a remarkable turnaround within just 14 minutes.
City responded immediately through Erling Haaland, who showed composure to chip the goalkeeper and reduce the deficit. From there, Pep Guardiola’s side pushed forward relentlessly in search of a leveller.
Everton, managed by David Moyes, looked set to secure a memorable victory, which would have been his first over Guardiola. But City refused to give up.
Deep into added time, Doku stepped up once again. The Belgian winger struck from distance with precision, finding the net with virtually the final kick to rescue a point for his side.
While the comeback highlighted City’s resilience, the earlier defensive collapse raises serious concerns at a crucial stage of the season. Dropping two points in such circumstances may have lasting consequences, especially with Arsenal maintaining their advantage at the top.
For Everton, the performance showed spirit and attacking intent, even if they were ultimately denied all three points. For City, it was a night that could define their title challenge for better or worse.
