Crystal Palace moved one step closer to a remarkable chapter in club history after securing a place in their first ever European final with a 2 1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Selhurst Park. The result completed an impressive 5 2 aggregate triumph in the Conference League semi final and booked the Eagles a showdown with Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig later this month.
The South London club once again showed composure and attacking quality under manager Oliver Glasner, whose impact on the side continues to grow. With his 50th win in charge, Glasner now stands on the verge of delivering another historic achievement after already helping Palace lift the FA Cup and Community Shield during an unforgettable spell.
Despite entering the second leg with a comfortable advantage from the opening encounter, Palace remained aggressive from the opening whistle. Early pressure almost produced a breakthrough when Yeremy Pino finished clinically after a clever flick from Jean Philippe Mateta, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.
The home side eventually found the breakthrough thanks to the relentless energy of Daniel Munoz. After Adam Wharton saw his effort saved, Munoz reacted quickest and his low strike took a deflection before flying beyond goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.
Shakhtar briefly threatened a comeback when Eguinaldo produced a stunning finish into the top corner to level the score on the night. However, Palace never looked rattled. Shortly before the interval, Mateta nearly restored the lead with an acrobatic attempt that crashed against the post.
Any remaining nerves disappeared early in the second half when Ismaila Sarr continued his outstanding European campaign by scoring his ninth goal of the competition and 19th of the season. His finish effectively sealed Palace’s place in the final and sparked celebrations around a packed Selhurst Park.
Speaking after the match, captain Dean Henderson praised the belief instilled by Glasner, while Wharton highlighted the emotional connection between the squad and supporters.
Now, Palace will travel to the Red Bull Arena on May 27 with the chance to crown an unforgettable European journey with silverware and further cement their place in football history.
