Aston Villa’s pursuit of a top four Premier League finish suffered another setback after Unai Emery’s side were forced to settle for a 2 2 draw against relegated Burnley at Turf Moor. The Midlands club arrived with confidence following their dominant victory over Nottingham Forest that secured a place in the Europa League final, but they failed to reproduce that intensity against a spirited Burnley side.
The home team grabbed the advantage after a costly mistake from Emiliano Martinez. Lesley Ugochukwu unleashed an effort from distance that the Villa goalkeeper could only push back into danger, allowing Jaidon Anthony to react quickest and slot the rebound into the net. Burnley nearly doubled their lead moments later when Zian Flemming found himself in a perfect scoring position, only to drag his attempt wide from close range.
Villa struggled to find rhythm during the opening stages, with Burnley looking sharper and more aggressive in midfield. However, the visitors finally showed signs of life after Ollie Watkins had a goal ruled out following a narrow VAR offside decision. That moment sparked a response from Emery’s men, and Ross Barkley soon restored parity with a well directed header that gave the away side renewed belief.
The momentum then appeared to swing completely in Villa’s favour. Watkins eventually got on the scoresheet after chasing down a long delivery from Martinez before calmly finishing to put his side ahead. Yet Burnley answered almost immediately. Just 160 seconds later, Flemming made amends for his earlier miss by guiding home the equaliser and silencing the travelling support.
The result means Villa are now without a league victory in three matches at a crucial stage of the campaign. Bournemouth sit only four points behind them in sixth place with two fixtures remaining, adding further pressure ahead of difficult encounters against Liverpool and Manchester City.
Despite the disappointment, Emery remained positive after the match. The Villa manager admitted his side should have been more efficient in front of goal but praised the team’s overall efforts during a demanding season. He also highlighted the excitement surrounding their upcoming Europa League final and insisted his players should remain proud of what they have achieved so far.
With Champions League qualification still within reach, Villa now face a tense finish to the season where every point could prove decisive.
