Manchester United secured an important 3–1 victory over Aston Villa, strengthening their position in the race for Champions League qualification. While the result delighted the Old Trafford crowd, it also reignited a debate surrounding the future of veteran midfielder Casemiro.

The Brazilian opened the scoring for United, continuing his recent scoring run with a second goal in consecutive matches. His contribution proved crucial as United moved three points clear of Villa in the battle for third place in the Premier League standings.

Under interim manager Michael Carrick, Casemiro has experienced a resurgence in form. Despite speculation about his departure over the past two summers, the experienced midfielder has remained a key figure in the squad. He has now started 13 consecutive Premier League matches, playing an instrumental role in United’s improved performances in recent weeks.

This season has also seen the 34-year-old deliver his best goal return in a United shirt, with seven goals across competitions. Many of those strikes have come from set-piece situations, where his positioning, physical presence, and experience continue to trouble opposition defences.

However, despite the midfielder’s strong form, former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes the club is still making the correct decision by allowing Casemiro to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Speaking on his podcast, Neville acknowledged Casemiro’s incredible career and impact but suggested the timing is right for both the player and the club to move on.

Casemiro joined United after a legendary spell at Real Madrid, where he was part of one of the most dominant midfields in modern football. Alongside Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos, he helped the Spanish giants dominate Europe and secure multiple Champions League titles.

Neville described the Brazilian’s current spell as something of a “swansong”, suggesting the midfielder appears to be enjoying the closing stages of his career at Old Trafford. Moments like celebrating with fans and kissing the club badge show just how much he appreciates the support he has received.

While his recent performances have reminded supporters of his quality, Neville insists United must focus on building a younger midfield for the future.

For now, Casemiro continues to deliver when it matters. And if this truly is his final chapter at Old Trafford, he seems determined to make it a memorable one.
