Cummins Leads From the Front as Sunrisers March Into IPL 2026 Playoffs

Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs after a composed run chase against Chennai Super Kings, a result that also secured Gujarat Titans a place in the final four. Chennai, meanwhile, now stand dangerously close to elimination despite producing a spirited performance at Chepauk.

The spotlight before the match was once again on MS Dhoni. The legendary captain arrived at the stadium for the first time this season, although a calf problem kept him out of action. His presence lifted the atmosphere, but SRH eventually spoiled the occasion with a clinical finish led by Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan.

Chennai’s innings never truly found early momentum. Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to accelerate in the powerplay and managed only 15 from 21 deliveries during the early stages. While many batters in modern T20 cricket attack from ball one, Gaikwad stayed patient and tried to settle in first. That approach slowed CSK’s progress significantly.

Pat Cummins made sure Hyderabad stayed on top with a brilliant spell of fast bowling. The SRH skipper claimed 3 for 28 and also completed 200 wickets in T20 cricket. Using clever slower deliveries on a sluggish surface, he removed Sanju Samson, Kartik Sharma, and Gaikwad to keep Chennai under pressure throughout the innings.

Dewald Brevis then injected life into the CSK total. The young South African finally displayed the aggression Chennai supporters had been waiting for, smashing 44 from 27 balls. His attacking strokes against spin and pace helped CSK recover strongly during the middle overs and push their score to 180.

Hyderabad’s chase began cautiously as Spencer Johnson and Mukesh Choudhary generated impressive pace with the new ball. Akeal Hosein also delivered an important breakthrough when he dismissed Abhishek Sharma during a key phase of the innings.

However, Klaasen completely changed the mood of the contest. The South African batter dominated the spinners with fearless stroke play and raced to 47 off only 26 balls. He attacked Noor Ahmad confidently and maintained a strike rate above 180 on a surface where timing was not easy.

Alongside him, Kishan played the perfect supporting role. His unbeaten fifty came from 37 deliveries and showcased maturity rather than pure aggression. He punished loose balls, rotated strike smartly, and ensured Hyderabad stayed in control until the winning moment arrived.

With this victory, SRH march confidently into the playoffs, while Chennai must now rely on other results to keep their campaign alive.
