Delhi Capitals closed their IPL 2026 journey with a commanding victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, powered by a superb innings from KL Rahul and a game changing spell from Kuldeep Yadav. What began as a clash with slim playoff hopes quickly lost significance after Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians, officially ending the qualification chances of both KKR and Punjab Kings.
Even with the playoff equation no longer alive, Delhi produced a spirited display to secure a convincing 40 run triumph.
Batting first, DC piled up 203 for 5 in their 20 overs. Rahul was the standout performer, producing a fluent 60 from just 30 deliveries. The stylish right hander looked in complete control, especially against Sunil Narine, whom he attacked fearlessly. Rahul struck the mystery spinner for 21 runs from only nine balls, including two towering sixes and a classy boundary. His half century arrived in only 25 balls before Anukul Roy eventually removed him.
Earlier, KKR had some bright moments with the ball through left arm pacer Saurabh Dubey. The youngster bowled with discipline and clever variations, conceding very little during the powerplay while also dismissing Abishek Porel. However, sloppy fielding hurt Kolkata badly, with crucial catches going down at important stages.
After Rahul’s departure, Axar Patel and David Miller continued the momentum. Axar smashed 39 from 25 deliveries, while Miller added late firepower with aggressive hitting in the final overs. Ashutosh Sharma also chipped in with a valuable unbeaten 18 as Delhi crossed the 200 mark.
KKR’s chase started aggressively through Finn Allen and captain Ajinkya Rahane. Allen attacked Mitchell Starc early, while Rahane countered with clean hitting against the seamers. At one stage, Kolkata looked well placed at 126 for 3 after 13 overs.
That was when Kuldeep completely changed the contest.
The left arm wrist spinner dismissed Rahane immediately after the captain reached his fifty and followed it up with the wicket of Rinku Singh on the very next delivery. Those two strikes shattered KKR’s momentum and exposed the lower middle order.
From there, the innings collapsed dramatically. Starc, Lungi Ngidi and Axar tightened the pressure, while a brilliant direct hit from substitute Sameer Rizvi removed Rovman Powell. Kolkata eventually lost their final seven wickets for only 37 runs and were bowled out for 163 in 18.4 overs.
Delhi Capitals may have missed the playoffs this season, but this performance showed the quality and balance they possessed when everything clicked together.
