Gill’s Elegant 86 Guides Gujarat Titans as KKR Remain Winless

Gujarat Titans produced a familiar, disciplined performance to hand Kolkata Knight Riders yet another defeat, leaving them without a win after six matches in IPL 2026. A composed 86 from Shubman Gill anchored the chase, built on the back of a clinical bowling effort that restricted KKR to a modest total.

Kolkata’s decisions before the game raised eyebrows. Leaving out Finn Allen and opting to bat despite expected dew later in the evening proved costly. Their innings never quite gained full control, apart from a short burst led by Cameron Green.

Green’s 79 from 55 balls told a story of contrasts. He struggled early, reaching just 27 from his first 29 deliveries, before suddenly accelerating with a flurry of boundaries. However, his momentum faded late, managing only four runs off his last 11 balls. During that phase, wickets fell regularly at the other end as KKR slipped from 147 for 4 to 180 all out.

The Titans’ pace attack set the tone early. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada made full use of movement with the new ball, troubling the batters with swing and bounce. KKR crawled to 37 for 3 in the first six overs, one of the lowest powerplay returns this season.

Chasing 181, Gujarat’s top order ensured there were no early nerves. Gill was in sublime touch, collecting 34 runs from just 15 balls in the powerplay. Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler chipped in with brisk contributions as the Titans raced to 71 for 1 inside six overs, putting the contest firmly in their grasp.

As the field spread, Gill shifted gears, focusing on stability rather than aggression. His calculated approach ensured KKR never found a way back, even though wickets at the other end slowed the chase slightly. After his dismissal in the 17th over, a hint of tension crept in, with the scoring rate tightening.

Despite a late wicket and a brief scare in the final over, Gujarat held their nerve. Rahul Tewatia and Glenn Phillips guided the team home with just two balls remaining.

While the Titans secured another important win, questions remain about their middle order’s ability to close games comfortably. For Kolkata, the story is far more concerning, as another underwhelming total and inconsistent execution leave them searching for answers in a campaign that continues to slip away.
