Samson’s Stunning Century Powers CSK to First IPL 2026 Victory

Chennai Super Kings finally opened their account in IPL 2026 with a commanding display at Chepauk, ending a frustrating run of six consecutive home losses carried over from last season. The victory was built around a magnificent century from Sanju Samson and a match-winning bowling spell by Jamie Overton.

Samson came out with aggressive intent from the very first over, dominating the powerplay and scoring 45 out of the team’s 61 runs in the opening six overs. The crowd of over 32,000 found their voice as he reached his half-century in just 26 balls, and the noise only intensified when he converted it into a brilliant 100 off 52 deliveries. His innings was filled with precision and power, setting the tone for a big total.

Support came from Ayush Mhatre, who struck a rapid fifty before being retired out after slowing down, while Shivam Dube added a quick contribution towards the end. Chennai finished strongly at 212 for 2, a total that initially seemed under threat given Delhi’s explosive start.

The chase began at a blistering pace as Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul raced past their fifties within the opening overs. Delhi surged to 61 inside five overs, putting Chennai under early pressure. However, timely breakthroughs shifted the momentum. Three wickets in quick succession disrupted the chase and forced Delhi onto the back foot.

Although Tristan Stubbs fought back with a determined 60 from 38 balls, the required rate kept climbing beyond reach. This is where Overton made his presence felt. Delivering with pace and accuracy, he picked up 4 wickets for just 18 runs, including the crucial dismissal of Stubbs in the closing stages.

His disciplined lengths and ability to generate speed proved decisive as Delhi’s middle order struggled to keep up. The late surge needed in the final overs never arrived, and Chennai’s bowlers maintained control to seal a convincing win.

This performance not only gave Chennai their first points of the season but also restored confidence in front of their home supporters, marking a potential turning point in their campaign.
