Sunrisers Hyderabad have reinforced their pace attack by bringing in Gerald Coetzee for the remainder of IPL 2026, following an injury to David Payne. The South African fast bowling allrounder has been signed for INR 2 crore as the franchise looks to stabilise its bowling unit midway through the season.
Payne’s stint with Hyderabad proved short lived. The experienced left arm seamer featured in two matches but struggled to contain runs, conceding 70 across five overs. His campaign was cut short after an ankle issue ruled him out. Interestingly, Payne himself had only recently joined the squad as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who withdrew before the tournament due to a foot problem.
Coetzee arrives with solid T20 credentials and previous IPL exposure. He was last seen in international action during South Africa’s tour of New Zealand in March, where he delivered a standout spell of 3 for 31 in one of the matches. His IPL journey includes a productive 2024 season with Mumbai Indians, where he claimed 13 wickets in 10 appearances, followed by a brief stint with Gujarat Titans in 2025, picking up two scalps in four outings.
Hyderabad’s injury concerns do not end there. Brydon Carse was also sidelined after sustaining a hand injury during pre season practice and did not feature in a single game. In response, the franchise drafted in Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka as cover.
There is, however, a positive development for the team. Captain Pat Cummins has been cleared to return after undergoing medical checks for a back concern in Sydney. Having missed the opening phase of the competition, he is expected to rejoin the squad soon, with a possible comeback slated for the clash against Rajasthan Royals on April 25.
Currently sitting fifth on the table with two wins from five matches, Hyderabad will next take on Chennai Super Kings at home. With reinforcements arriving and key players returning, the team will be aiming to build momentum in the second half of the tournament.
