Oleksandr Usyk successfully defended his heavyweight championships in a dramatic and controversial contest against kickboxing superstar Rico Verhoeven in Egypt. While many expected the Ukrainian champion to dominate a fighter with limited professional boxing experience, the bout turned into one of the toughest nights of his recent career.
Held beneath the iconic Pyramids of Giza, the event attracted some of the biggest names in combat sports and entertainment. Despite entering the contest as a clear underdog, Verhoeven delivered a performance that surprised fans and experts alike.
Verhoeven Exceeds Expectations
The Dutch heavyweight came into the fight with only one previous professional boxing appearance, but he showed confidence from the opening bell. Using movement, pressure, and a high work rate, Verhoeven consistently tested Usyk and landed several notable shots throughout the early rounds.
A strong right hand in the third round caught the champion cleanly, while his body work and aggression prevented Usyk from settling into his usual rhythm. The 37 year old challenger displayed impressive composure against one of boxing’s most accomplished fighters.
Usyk had moments of success, particularly with his sharp combinations and accurate uppercuts, but he appeared less dominant than many expected. Ringside observers watched as the contest remained highly competitive through the middle rounds.
Late Drama Changes The Fight
As the championship rounds approached, the momentum remained evenly balanced. Scorecards at the time reflected just how close the battle had been, with two judges scoring it 95-95 and the third giving Verhoeven a narrow 96-94 advantage.
The turning point arrived in round eleven when Usyk connected with a precise left uppercut that dropped the challenger to the canvas. Verhoeven rose before the count expired and appeared ready to continue.
However, after Usyk launched a brief attacking sequence in the final moments of the round, the referee intervened and stopped the contest. The decision immediately sparked debate, with many believing the Dutch fighter deserved the opportunity to continue.
Rematch Talk Begins
Following the bout, Verhoeven expressed disappointment with the stoppage and suggested the ending came too soon. He stated that he wanted the chance to either finish the fight on his feet or compete through the final round.
The victory improved Usyk’s professional record to 25 wins without defeat and allowed him to retain his WBC heavyweight title and WBA Super championship. Nevertheless, the performance raised questions and left many fans calling for a second meeting between the two fighters.
What was expected to be a routine title defence instead became one of the most talked about heavyweight contests of the year.
