Xabi Alonso Set for Chelsea Job as Blues Begin Another Rebuild

Chelsea are preparing to hand Xabi Alonso the responsibility of leading their next rebuilding phase after the Spaniard agreed to become the club’s new permanent manager on a four year contract.

The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach is expected to officially take charge on July 1 ahead of preseason preparations. Chelsea’s leadership moved quickly to secure Alonso after identifying him as their preferred choice to guide the club back into contention among England’s elite sides.

The managerial vacancy opened following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior in April, just three months into his spell at Stamford Bridge. Since then, interim coach Calum McFarlane has overseen first team duties, including Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat against Manchester City at Wembley.

Chelsea’s ownership reportedly sees Alonso as more than just a tactician. The club wants a figure capable of rebuilding identity, discipline and long term direction after several turbulent seasons under the BlueCo era. Unlike previous appointments, Alonso will reportedly carry the title of manager instead of head coach, reflecting the wider influence he is expected to have across football operations.

The 44 year old arrives with an impressive reputation despite a difficult final chapter at Real Madrid, where he was dismissed in January after only seven months in charge. Before that setback, Alonso earned widespread praise for guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title winning campaign during the 2023 and 2024 season, one of the most remarkable achievements in recent German football history.

Chelsea considered several candidates during the process. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Fulham manager Marco Silva, Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner, Como’s Cesc Fabregas and former Flamengo boss Felipe Luis were all monitored. Iraola was believed to have made a particularly strong impression internally.

Despite speculation linking Alonso with a return to Liverpool due to Arne Slot’s inconsistent campaign, the Spaniard instead chose Stamford Bridge as his next destination.

Chelsea are expected to support Alonso in the summer transfer market with experienced additions, particularly in defence. A new centre back is already among the club’s top priorities.

The Blues currently sit ninth in the Premier League standings and remain in danger of missing European football next season. Still, Chelsea’s hierarchy believes Alonso is the right figure to restore stability and guide the club back toward competing for major honours consistently.
