England Tighten Grip at Lord’s After Setting New Zealand 254 to Win

England moved into a commanding position at Lord’s after reducing New Zealand to 36 for 3 in pursuit of 254, capping another dramatic day dominated by fast bowlers and challenging batting conditions.

The match continued to be dictated by a lively surface that offered uneven bounce and constant assistance to seamers. By the end of the second day, 33 wickets had fallen in total, highlighting just how difficult batting has been for both sides.

New Zealand began the morning trailing England by 29 runs. Their hopes of building a meaningful first innings total quickly disappeared as England’s pace attack finished the job. Ollie Robinson completed a well deserved five wicket haul, his first in four years, while Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson also made important contributions. Glenn Phillips, who had provided resistance on the opening evening, was dismissed with the first delivery of the day.

England’s second innings started positively through debutant Emilio Gay and Ben Duckett. Gay looked far more settled than in his first outing and produced a composed half century, becoming the first England opener since Keaton Jennings in 2016 to reach fifty on Test debut. Alongside Duckett, he put together a valuable opening partnership that steadied the innings.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically when New Zealand’s bowlers struck back. From a promising 126 for 2, England collapsed to 127 for 6 in the space of just 11 deliveries. Harry Brook, Joe Root and Ben Stokes all departed during a remarkable spell that briefly put the visitors back in the contest.

The recovery came through Jamie Smith and Atkinson, whose 57 run partnership proved to be the largest stand of the match. Their efforts helped push England’s lead beyond 200 and ensured the hosts remained in control. Although New Zealand eventually wrapped up the innings, the target of 254 looked daunting given the behaviour of the pitch.

England then delivered the perfect response with the ball. Tom Latham fell early after edging Atkinson to slip, while Kane Williamson’s disappointing match continued when Tongue trapped him lbw for 18. Nightwatchman Will O’Rourke survived only six deliveries before Atkinson knocked over his stumps.

At stumps, Devon Conway remained unbeaten on 12, but New Zealand still require another 218 runs with only seven wickets in hand. On a surface where batting has been a constant struggle, England will feel they are firmly in the driving seat heading into day three.
