Wyatt Hodge Century Powers England to Dominant World Cup Opening Win

England could hardly have asked for a better start to their home T20 World Cup campaign as they swept aside Sri Lanka by 87 runs in front of a lively crowd of 14,865 at Edgbaston.

The hosts produced an all round display packed with confidence, highlighted by a magnificent unbeaten century from Danni Wyatt Hodge. The experienced batter struck 105 runs from just 62 deliveries, registering her third T20 international hundred and her first since returning to cricket following maternity leave. Her effort laid the foundation for England’s imposing total of 220.

Opening alongside Amy Jones, Wyatt Hodge helped England seize control from the beginning. The pair added 135 runs for the first wicket from only 82 balls, putting Sri Lanka’s bowlers under relentless pressure. Jones played an important supporting role with a brisk 50 from 34 deliveries, ensuring the momentum never slowed.

Wyatt Hodge reached her half century in just 33 balls and continued to accelerate as the innings progressed. Her innings featured clean stroke play all around the ground and she eventually reached three figures in the final over. England captain Nat Sciver Brunt added further damage late in the innings, remaining unbeaten on 46 from only 22 balls and helping the hosts cross the 220 mark.

Faced with a daunting chase, Sri Lanka never managed to build any sustained partnerships. England’s bowlers and fielders maintained their intensity throughout the innings. Lauren Bell claimed the first wicket of England’s tournament when she trapped Vishmi Gunaratne lbw, while Wyatt Hodge followed her batting heroics with a spectacular running catch to remove Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu.

Freya Kemp then took centre stage with the ball. The left arm seamer delivered a match changing spell, collecting outstanding figures of 4 for 21. She removed key batters at crucial moments and triggered a collapse that effectively ended Sri Lanka’s hopes. Linsey Smith also contributed with a wicket, while Sophie Ecclestone wrapped up the innings with two dismissals in the final over.

Sri Lanka struggled to cope with England’s energy, discipline and skill, eventually falling well short of the target. The convincing 87 run victory provides England with an ideal start to the tournament and sends an early message to the rest of the competition.

With Wyatt Hodge, Sciver Brunt and Kemp all delivering standout performances, England look ready to challenge strongly for World Cup glory in the weeks ahead.
