Australia began their T20I series against Bangladesh in commanding fashion, securing a four wicket victory in Chattogram to move 1-0 ahead in the contest. The visitors owed much of their success to a superb effort from their spin department, which accounted for nine of Bangladesh’s ten wickets.
Adam Zampa and debutant Joel Davies led the charge with three wickets apiece. The performance also marked a significant milestone for Zampa, who became the first Australian player to claim 150 wickets in T20 internationals. He now joins an elite group of leg spinners that includes Rashid Khan, Ish Sodhi, Adil Rashid and Wanindu Hasaranga who have reached that landmark.
Bangladesh made a lively start after being sent in to bat. Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan played aggressively during the opening overs, helping the hosts reach 52 for 2 in the powerplay, their highest six over total against Australia in T20 internationals. However, the momentum quickly shifted once Australia’s slower bowlers entered the attack.
Zampa struck first by removing stand in skipper Towhid Hridoy before dismissing Soumya Sarkar soon after. Davies enjoyed a dream start to international cricket when he claimed a wicket with his second delivery. The left arm spinner continued to trouble the middle order as Bangladesh lost wickets regularly and struggled to build partnerships.
Matt Renshaw and Nikhil Chaudhary also contributed with crucial breakthroughs, while Mahedi Hasan’s unbeaten 29 was the only meaningful resistance during the latter stages of the innings. Bangladesh eventually posted 132, a total that never looked sufficient on a surface offering assistance to the bowlers.
Australia’s chase suffered an early setback when Josh Inglis departed cheaply, but Cooper Connolly ensured there would be no panic. The left hander produced his best T20I innings, scoring 47 from only 27 deliveries. His innings featured seven boundaries, including three maximums, and kept Australia firmly in control.
Tim David added valuable support with a quickfire 20, striking a pair of towering sixes before falling while attempting another big shot. Although Bangladesh claimed a few late wickets through Abdul Gaffar Saqlain and Rishad Hossain, the result was never seriously in doubt.
Australia completed the chase with ten balls remaining, underlining their dominance in both departments. With their spinners in outstanding form and several batters contributing, the visitors will head into the second T20I full of confidence as they look to secure the series.
