Atletico Madrid showed remarkable determination to secure a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart, with Julian Alvarez opening his scoring account for the campaign in an entertaining European encounter.
The Argentine striker, whose future attracted considerable attention during the summer following Barcelona’s interest, demonstrated his importance to Diego Simeone’s squad with a crucial equaliser.
Stuttgart entered the contest with confidence after winning their previous two matches in the competition. The German outfit controlled much of the opening period, creating several promising opportunities while keeping Atletico’s attacking threats largely contained.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 36th minute when Jamie Leweling produced an accurate effort from outside the penalty area, sending the ball into the bottom corner to establish a deserved advantage.
However, Atletico responded immediately following the interval. Ademola Lookman, introduced during the break, provided the decisive pass for Alvarez, who calmly converted from close range just 80 seconds after play resumed.
The visitors appeared capable of building momentum, but their ambitions suffered a significant setback in the 64th minute. Morten Hjulmand received a straight red card following a dangerous tackle on Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, forcing Atletico to complete the remaining 26 minutes with ten players.
With numerical superiority, Stuttgart increased their attacking intensity and searched desperately for another breakthrough. Their clearest opportunity arrived when Jeff Chabot failed to direct his header towards goal following a corner delivered by Maximilian Mittelstadt.
Despite sustained pressure, Simeone’s players maintained their defensive organisation and successfully protected the result until the final whistle.
The outcome represented a frustrating evening for Stuttgart, who failed to capitalise on their dominance and additional player. For Atletico, Alvarez’s timely contribution and the team’s resilience ensured they returned with a valuable point from a challenging contest.
