Aline Pereira Falls Short of UFC Dream Following Defeat to Smilla Sundell

Brazilian mixed martial artist Aline Pereira has suffered a major setback in her pursuit of a UFC career after falling to Swedish prospect Smilla Sundell on Dana White’s Contender Series.

The 36 year old, who is the younger sister of former UFC champion Alex Pereira, entered the contest hoping to earn a place among the promotion’s elite fighters. However, Sundell delivered an impressive performance, controlling the action with relentless attacks and superior striking activity.

All three judges awarded the victory to the 21 year old Swede, leaving Pereira without the contract she had been chasing.

The result brings Pereira’s professional MMA record to three victories and three defeats since making her debut in 2022. Her latest appearance followed a successful outing on the Ronda Rousey versus Gina Carano event in May, which was broadcast on Netflix.

Despite Sundell’s convincing triumph, UFC president Dana White initially questioned whether the young fighter possessed sufficient experience to compete at the highest level. Following discussions with his colleagues, he eventually approved her signing.

Meanwhile, Alex Pereira continues to hold an impressive legacy in the organisation. The 39 year old previously captured championship honours in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. His attempt to secure a historic third divisional crown ended in June when heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane defeated him.

Away from the Contender Series, White also addressed Sean Strickland’s criticism regarding fighter earnings. Strickland recently expressed frustration with MMA compensation and suggested boxing could provide greater financial rewards.

White dismissed those concerns by highlighting that the reigning middleweight champion had agreed to a fresh UFC contract in May.

For Aline Pereira, the immediate challenge is rebuilding momentum and demonstrating that she deserves another opportunity to reach the UFC.
