Leeds United continued their impressive start to the Premier League season with a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Elland Road, handing Matthias Jaissle his first defeat since taking charge of the Magpies.
Dominic Calvert Lewin was at the heart of a superb Leeds performance as Daniel Farke’s side overwhelmed Newcastle with their intensity, pressing and physical approach. The victory maintained Leeds’ unbeaten start to the league campaign and lifted them to third in the Premier League table with eight points from their opening four matches.
The hosts took control after 32 minutes when Ao Tanaka’s effort took two deflections, the final touch coming off Newcastle midfielder Lewis Miley, before finding the back of the net for an own goal.
Leeds needed less than three minutes to double their advantage. Calvert Lewin rose powerfully to meet the ball with a header, but replays showed Jayden Bogle got the final touch, giving the defender the goal and Calvert Lewin the assist.
Newcastle struggled to cope with the home side’s relentless pressure, and Leeds effectively put the contest beyond their opponents before half time. Calvert Lewin powered his way into the penalty area before producing a composed finish in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-0. It was his eighth career goal against Newcastle.
Any hopes of a Newcastle comeback disappeared after the interval when Noah Okafor produced an excellent finish to add Leeds’ fourth in the 59th minute.
Newcastle eventually found a consolation through substitute Bazoumana Toure in the closing stages, but the goal did little to change the story of a night dominated by Leeds.
Calvert Lewin’s influence extended well beyond his goal. The striker caused constant problems for Newcastle’s defence with his aerial ability, physical strength and work rate. Farke praised the forward after the match, highlighting both his confidence and his importance in leading the Leeds attack.
For Newcastle, the result represented the first major setback of the Jaissle era. The Magpies had gone into the game unbeaten under their new manager, but without injured winger Anthony Elanga they lacked much of their usual attacking threat.
Jaissle admitted afterwards that his team failed to match Leeds physically, particularly during the first half. He described the defeat as difficult to accept but stressed that Newcastle must use the experience as a learning opportunity and respond quickly in their next fixture.
The result was another strong statement from Leeds, who have quickly established themselves among the early front-runners. Their combination of aggressive pressing, organization and attacking efficiency proved too much for Newcastle, while Calvert Lewin’s form gives Farke an increasingly dangerous focal point in attack.
For the Elland Road supporters, a 4-1 victory over Newcastle was further evidence of the momentum building around the club. For Jaissle and the Magpies, however, the heavy defeat provided a reminder of just how unforgiving the Premier League can be.
