Canelo vs Mbilli Fight Card Revealed as Security Concerns Grow in Riyadh

Boxing fans are preparing for a major championship encounter between Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli on October 31, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, uncertainty surrounding regional security has raised questions about whether the highly anticipated event will proceed at its planned location.

Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and President of the Saudi Boxing Federation, revealed the supporting fight programme on Thursday. The event, promoted under the theme “Mexico vs the World,” will feature Alvarez challenging Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight championship.

According to the announced schedule, DAZN will provide live coverage, with preliminary contests beginning at 12 noon Eastern Time and 9 a.m. Pacific Time.

Despite preparations moving forward, reported drone attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi movement have heightened concerns about safety in the Saudi capital. Reports involving Riyadh’s airport have added uncertainty, while travel guidance issued by authorities in the United States, Canada and Mexico has prompted further questions about international attendance.

For Alvarez, the contest represents an opportunity to rebuild momentum following his defeat against Terence Crawford in Las Vegas. The Mexican boxing superstar has remained outside the ring for approximately 13 months and will seek to reclaim championship glory.

Meanwhile, undefeated French Cameroonian fighter Mbilli enters the contest with considerable confidence. He secured the interim WBC championship after defeating Maciej Sulecki in June and was subsequently recognised as the division’s full champion in January 2026.

Mbilli previously appeared on the Alvarez versus Crawford supporting programme, earning a draw against Guatemala’s Lester Martinez.

Although organisers have announced the supporting bouts, uncertainty remains over the venue. With October 31 approaching, attention will focus on security developments and whether Riyadh can safely host one of boxing’s biggest events.
