Cape Verde’s remarkable first appearance on football’s biggest stage continued with another eye catching performance as they secured a 2-2 draw against two time world champions Uruguay in Miami.
After surprising many by holding Spain to a scoreless draw in their opening fixture, the Blue Sharks once again demonstrated their growing confidence and quality against one of South America’s traditional powerhouses.
The island nation struck first midway through the opening half. Kevin Pina produced a stunning free kick from distance that slipped through the Uruguayan defensive wall and found the net, giving Cape Verde an early advantage and sending their supporters into celebration.
The goal changed the rhythm of the contest. Rather than sitting back, Cape Verde pushed forward with greater intent, creating an open encounter. However, their attacking ambition also left spaces for Uruguay to exploit.
Uruguay responded well and found an equaliser when Maxi Araujo met a loose defensive touch with a diving header. The momentum then shifted further in Uruguay’s favour just before the break. Agustin Canobbio, handed a starting role after missing out on the first lineup against Saudi Arabia, finished from close range after excellent work by Araujo to give his side a 2-1 lead heading into half time.
Despite falling behind, Cape Verde refused to abandon their positive approach. While Uruguay’s aggressive pressing frequently disrupted their passing sequences, the African side remained committed to building attacks and searching for opportunities.
Their persistence paid off in the second half following a costly defensive mistake. Uruguay defender Mathias Olivera attempted a pass across his own penalty area without spotting Helio Varela lurking nearby. The Cape Verde forward calmly collected possession, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an unguarded net to restore parity.
The closing stages delivered further drama. Federico Valverde thought he had secured victory for Uruguay, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside. Both teams created promising openings during stoppage time, but neither could find the decisive goal.
The result leaves Uruguay in second place and Cape Verde in third in Group H, with both nations sitting on two points after two matches. Cape Verde now head into their final group fixture against Saudi Arabia knowing a place in the last 32 remains firmly within reach. Uruguay, meanwhile, face a difficult challenge against Spain and will need a strong result to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
