McDermott and Sahan Power Colombo Kaps Into Qualifier 2
Colombo Kaps secured their place in Qualifier 2 of the Lanka Premier League 2026 after defeating Kandy Royals by 68 runs in the Eliminator at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on 5 August.
Choosing to bat after winning the toss, Colombo delivered a powerful batting performance and finished on 203 for 7 from 20 overs. Ben McDermott was the standout performer, taking control from the number three position with an excellent 71 from 39 balls. His innings featured one four and seven sixes, giving the Kaps the platform for a commanding total.
James Neesham then added vital momentum during the closing stages with a rapid 42, while Janith Liyanage contributed a useful 32. Their efforts ensured Colombo moved beyond the 200 mark and placed Kandy under pressure.
Nuwan Thushara, Zahir Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi collected two wickets each for the Royals, but their breakthroughs could not stop the scoring rate.
Set 204 to win, Kandy struggled to establish a steady rhythm. Lahiru Udara once again showed his quality at the top of the order, scoring 50 from 36 deliveries with five fours and two sixes. However, support from the remaining batters was limited.
Wanuja Sahan changed the contest with a disciplined spell of left arm spin. He conceded only eight runs in four overs, claimed two wickets and delivered 18 dot balls. His control increased the pressure and forced Kandy into risky shots.
The Royals eventually closed on 135 as wickets fell regularly and the required rate climbed beyond reach. It was a complete performance from Colombo, combining calculated batting, disciplined bowling and control throughout the contest.
Colombo Kaps will meet Galle Gallants in Qualifier 2 on 7 August at the same venue. The winner will advance to the LPL 2026 final against Jaffna Kings on 8 August.
