Coventry Sink Deeper as Brighton Cruise to Comfortable Win

Coventry’s rocky return to England’s top flight grew even bleaker as Brighton handed them a fourth straight loss, leaving Frank Lampard’s men still searching for their opening goal of the campaign.

The Sky Blues now share an unwanted record with Crystal Palace’s 2017-18 side, becoming only the second club in Premier League history to drop their opening four fixtures without finding the net. It also marks the first occasion in the club’s entire league history that they’ve begun a season without a single goal or point through four games, something last seen only in their debut top flight campaign of 1919-20.

Brighton looked sharp early on, with young forward Charalampos Kostoulas twice going close before finally breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute through a brilliant solo run and finish. Despite creating numerous openings themselves, Coventry couldn’t convert and paid a heavy price after the break.

Malick Yalcouye doubled Brighton’s advantage soon after halftime, and things worsened further when Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for a reckless arm on Maxim de Cuyper. A penalty from Pascal Gross, awarded after Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas inside the area, extended the gap before Lewis Dunk fired home a stunning strike from range. Yasin Ayari added further gloss deep into stoppage time to complete a resounding scoreline.

The result pushes Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton side up to fourth in the standings, while Coventry remain stuck at the very bottom, facing an increasingly uphill battle to turn their season around.
