Alex Pereira stands on the verge of creating a moment that could change the history of mixed martial arts forever. According to UFC president Dana White, the Brazilian superstar could become the greatest fighter the sport has ever seen if he captures a third UFC world title at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14.
Pereira is scheduled to meet Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight championship at the special event taking place on the grounds of the White House. A victory would make him the first athlete in UFC history to secure championships across three different weight divisions, a feat that has never been achieved before.
White has often referred to Jon Jones as the greatest competitor to enter the Octagon. However, he now believes Pereira’s remarkable journey could place him above the former heavyweight king in the all time rankings.
The numbers behind Pereira’s rise are extraordinary. Holding a professional MMA record of 13 wins and 3 defeats, he arrived in the UFC with only a handful of professional bouts to his name. Despite his relative inexperience in mixed martial arts, he quickly established himself as one of the sport’s biggest stars.
Before stepping into the UFC, Pereira had already built a successful combat sports career by winning world titles in two divisions under the Glory Kickboxing banner. His transition to MMA was equally impressive. In 2022, he defeated Israel Adesanya to claim the middleweight championship, adding another major accomplishment to his growing legacy. He later moved up and captured the light heavyweight crown before vacating the title earlier this year to focus on a heavyweight campaign.
Interestingly, Pereira’s pursuit of greatness may not end with Gane. There remains significant interest in a potential showdown against Jones. Although Jones announced his retirement in 2025, he later indicated he would be willing to return for a blockbuster contest with the Brazilian star. Jones still owns the UFC record for most victories in championship fights with 16.
Beyond the interim title, there is another challenge waiting on the horizon. The winner of Pereira versus Gane is expected to face undisputed heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. Aspinall is currently recovering from eye injuries sustained in his most recent appearance, while contract discussions between his team and the UFC continue.
For now, all attention remains on Pereira. One more victory could elevate him from champion to undisputed legend.
