De Zorzi and Nortje Return as South Africa Prepare for Bangladesh

South Africa have welcomed Tony de Zorzi back into their Test squad ahead of the upcoming two match series against Bangladesh, bringing renewed competition to their batting department.

The talented opener has regained fitness following a hamstring injury suffered during September’s third ODI against Australia. His selection comes at the expense of David Bedingham, who struggled to establish consistency during the recent Australian contest.

Zubayr Hamza has also earned a recall, providing additional batting options after impressive performances for South Africa A. Meanwhile, Kyle Verreynne misses out, leaving Ryan Rickelton as the preferred wicketkeeper and Matthew Breetzke as backup.

The bowling department receives an important boost with Anrich Nortje returning after recovering from a groin injury. His availability strengthens a formidable pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Wiaan Mulder, Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson.

However, Lungi Ngidi remains unavailable while recovering from a hamstring problem.

Spin selection presents another challenge for the Proteas management. Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer have both secured squad places, although conditions in Johannesburg and Centurion could favour an additional fast bowler.

Harmer’s selection ahead of Maharaj during the final two Tests against Australia demonstrated the difficult decisions facing captain Temba Bavuma and coach Shukri Conrad.

Another major consideration involves the opening partnership. De Zorzi could reunite with Aiden Markram, potentially allowing Marques Ackerman to occupy the crucial third batting position.

Following their successful series against Australia, South Africa enter the Bangladesh fixtures as the world’s leading Test nation.

The opening encounter begins on November 15 in Johannesburg, while SuperSport Park hosts the second match from November 23.

With experienced players returning and several positions under consideration, the Proteas will aim to maintain their impressive momentum and reinforce their position at the summit of international Test cricket against Bangladesh.
