DR Congo Rally Past Uzbekistan to Set Up England Clash

DR Congo created a historic moment at the World Cup as they reached the knockout stage for the first time, coming from behind to defeat Uzbekistan in their final group match.

Uzbekistan made the stronger start and took control early in the game. Eldor Shomurodov opened the scoring after a mistake at the back from DR Congo. Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan Bissaka failed to deal with a loose ball quickly enough, allowing Shomurodov to lift a calm finish over the goalkeeper and give his side the lead.

The Asian side continued to look dangerous for much of the first half, showing confidence in attack and pushing forward in search of a second goal. However, DR Congo still carried a threat of their own. They were unlucky not to equalise when a goal was ruled out after a foul was spotted earlier in the move. Nathanael Mbuku also went close with a sharp strike that flashed inside the near post.

After the break, DR Congo returned with greater urgency, knowing their hopes of qualification were on the line. Their pressure paid off when Yoane Wissa was brought down inside the penalty area by Abdukodir Khusanov. Wissa stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to bring his team level.

The momentum then shifted firmly towards DR Congo. Fiston Mayele completed the turnaround, reacting quickly after Meschack Elia’s deflected shot fell into his path and finishing from close range.

Wissa then sealed the result in stoppage time with a composed strike from the edge of the box, sending the ball into the far corner.

The 3 to 1 victory means DR Congo finish third in Group K and advance to the last 32, where they will face England in Atlanta on Wednesday at 17:00 BST.
