Curacao created a memorable chapter in their football history by collecting their first ever point at a FIFA World Cup after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw in Group E. The result was built around an extraordinary performance from veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room, whose brilliance between the posts frustrated Ecuador throughout the contest.
The 37 year old shot stopper delivered one of the finest goalkeeping displays seen on the tournament stage, making 15 saves during the match. That total matched the World Cup record previously set by United States goalkeeper Tim Howard during his country’s clash against Belgium in 2014. Unlike Howard’s effort, however, Room’s performance helped secure a valuable clean sheet and a landmark result for his nation.
Ecuador started brightly and looked capable of opening the scoring within minutes. Enner Valencia came closest early on, only to see his effort denied by a stunning reflex stop from Room. The Curacao captain continued to frustrate the South American side, producing several important interventions before halftime to keep the score level.
The pressure increased after the interval as Ecuador pushed forward in search of the breakthrough. Moises Caicedo, Pedro Vite, Kevin Rodriguez, Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata were among the players denied by the inspired goalkeeper. Despite creating numerous opportunities, Ecuador simply could not find a way past Curacao’s last line of defence.
Curacao were not limited to defending. They also produced moments of danger going forward, with Leandro Bacuna testing Ecuador’s goalkeeper shortly after the hour mark. Liviana Comenencia also came close, but neither side could find the decisive touch.
The statistics highlighted Ecuador’s dominance. They registered 27 attempts and accumulated an expected goals figure of 3.05. Yet the final whistle confirmed another disappointing attacking display. After suffering a narrow defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening fixture, Ecuador have now gone two matches without scoring despite producing 39 shots across those games.
Manager Sebastian Beccacece may face increasing questions about his team’s lack of cutting edge in the final third. While Ecuador remain defensively strong, their struggles in front of goal threaten to undermine their World Cup ambitions.
The result leaves Ecuador needing a positive outcome against already qualified Germany in their final group match. Curacao, meanwhile, remain in contention for a place in the knockout rounds and could complete an incredible turnaround by defeating Ivory Coast in their final fixture.
