England Begin Life After Bazball Against Pakistan

England and Pakistan begin their Test series at Headingley with both sides searching for stability after difficult stretches on and off the field.

The teams sit seventh and eighth in the World Test Championship standings, while recent results underline their struggles. England have managed only two victories in their last ten Tests, with Pakistan winning two of their previous seven. Neither side has claimed a Test series since late 2024, and Pakistan have not won a Test tour in England since 1996.

England arrive after losing a home Test series for the first time since 2012. Their leadership structure has also shifted dramatically. Ben Stokes has retired, Brendon McCullum has departed as coach, and Joe Root has returned for another spell as captain. The current coaching arrangement is temporary, with Stephen Fleming expected to take charge later.

Pakistan have endured even greater instability. Five different men have coached their Test team since the 2023 to 2024 season. Shan Masood has now been replaced as skipper by Babar Azam, although a hand injury has ruled Babar out of the opening Test. Salman Agha will therefore captain Pakistan in Tests for the first time.

Despite the uncertainty, Pakistan could still trouble England in familiar seaming conditions. Mohammad Abbas remains a major threat with his accuracy and movement, while a dry English summer may also bring spin into the contest more than usual.

England have selection questions too. Emilio Gay has another chance to establish himself at the top, while Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence need to make their opportunities count. Without Stokes, finding the right balance will be crucial.

This may not be a clash between the leading Test nations, but two vulnerable teams fighting to rebuild could make Headingley an unexpectedly absorbing contest. For both camps, a strong start matters enormously.
