Five Star Lennox Inspires New Zealand to Series Levelling Win

Jayden Lennox produced a career defining bowling performance as New Zealand defeated West Indies by five wickets to draw level in the ODI series.

The New Zealand spinner claimed an outstanding 5 for 19, helping dismiss the hosts for just 138. His figures rank as the third best by a New Zealand spin bowler in men’s ODI cricket, behind Ish Sodhi’s 6 for 39 and Daniel Vettori’s remarkable 5 for 7.

West Indies initially appeared comfortable as John Campbell and Ackeem Auguste built a 63 run opening partnership. Campbell contributed 43, but the innings changed dramatically once New Zealand introduced their spin attack.

Michael Bracewell made the first breakthrough before Lennox tore through the middle and lower order. Four of his five victims were bowled, highlighting his accuracy and ability to exploit the turning pitch. Mitchell Santner also impressed with two important wickets as New Zealand’s spinners combined for nine dismissals, a national record in an ODI innings.

Chasing 139, New Zealand made a positive beginning through Henry Nicholls and Will Young, who added 35 for the opening wicket. However, West Indies responded strongly and reduced the tourists to 96 for 5.

Tom Latham remained composed under pressure and formed a crucial partnership with Bracewell. The pair carefully managed the final stage of the chase, with Bracewell also passing 1,000 career ODI runs after striking consecutive boundaries against Gudakesh Motie.

Latham’s calm presence ensured there was no late drama as New Zealand completed the target with five wickets remaining.

The victory leaves the contest evenly balanced ahead of the next match in Guyana on Thursday. The final two ODIs will then take place in Barbados, with Sunday’s fixture scheduled as a day match.
