Fleetwood Town secured a piece of club history on Tuesday, edging Championship outfit Sheffield United to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the very first time. The League Two outfit will now host Premier League title holders Arsenal in a dream last-16 fixture.
The decisive moment came in the 57th minute when Rhys Norrington-Davies inadvertently steered a delivery from Danny Andrew past his own goalkeeper, gifting the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Before that breakthrough, Fleetwood had already given warning signs of their intent. Goalkeeper Michael Cooper was forced into three notable stops before halftime, denying Mark Helm’s crisp strike from range, thwarting Lewis McCann from close quarters, and clawing away a header from Crispin McLean.
Chris Wilder’s visitors, unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions coming into the tie, rotated heavily with seven changes following their weekend defeat to Wolves. Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, they lacked cutting edge, with Tyrese Campbell’s first-half attempt drifting wide of Jay Lynch’s post the closest they came.
Ched Evans, once on Sheffield United’s books himself, tested Cooper again after the interval, but Fleetwood continued to look the more dangerous side. A Andrew effort was chalked off for offside against teammate Aaron Loupalo-Bi, while McCann’s blocked shot cannoned off the woodwork before Andrew’s rebound struck the opposite post.
Sheffield United rallied late, with Lynch producing outstanding saves to deny both Sydie Peck and Ben Brereton Diaz, and Finley Potter making a crucial goal line clearance from Tom Cannon. Yet the fourth tier club held firm, sealing a famous victory and a glamour tie against the Gunners.
