France Stage Stunning Late Fightback to Defeat Belgium

France produced a remarkable late comeback against Belgium, scoring four times in the closing 13 minutes to secure victory in the UEFA Nations League and continue their unbeaten run under Zinedine Zidane.

Belgium looked on course for an important result after Dodi Lukebakio broke the deadlock. Romeo Lavia created the opportunity with an outstanding 60 yard pass that released Lukebakio behind the French defence. He kept his composure and finished beyond debutant goalkeeper Guillaume Restes.

Despite falling behind, France continued to apply pressure and search for a route back into the contest. Their persistence was finally rewarded when Desire Doue struck a low effort from outside the penalty area, beating Belgium debutant Maarten Vandevoordt to restore parity.

The momentum quickly shifted in France’s favour. Substitute Michael Olise delivered a clever cutback into the path of Rayan Cherki, who converted to put the visitors in front.

Olise then took control of the closing stages himself. The Bayern Munich attacker scored twice late on, with Doue providing the final pass for both goals as Belgium’s resistance collapsed.

The impressive display continued Olise’s outstanding international form. He has now contributed to 17 goals across 16 appearances for France during 2026.

The result strengthened France’s position at the summit of Group A1. Zidane’s team have collected 10 points from four fixtures, while Mark van Bommel’s Belgium sit third with six.

Elsewhere in the group, Italy climbed into second position following a 3 to 1 home triumph against Turkey. Gianluca Scamacca opened the scoring before Aral Simsir brought Turkey level.

Riccardo Calafiori restored Italy’s advantage with a header before Pio Esposito added another goal to secure all three points for Roberto Mancini’s side.
