Ghana Exit As Colombia Continue Their Unbeaten Run

Colombia moved into the World Cup last 16 with a controlled and confident performance, defeating Ghana one nil on a hot night in Kansas City. Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the first half, while Ghana produced another flat attacking display that brought their tournament to an early end.

The match was played in temperatures above 30C even late into the evening, but Colombia handled the difficult conditions far better. Nestor Lorenzo’s team looked sharper, quicker and more organised from the start, and their early pressure soon paid off.

The opening stages were eventful. Ghana almost stunned Colombia inside the first minute when Thomas Partey sent a powerful strike narrowly wide from distance. Soon after, both teams were forced into early changes. Colombia lost Jhon Cordoba to a groin problem, bringing on Luis Suarez, while Ghana right back Marvin Senaya went off with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Alidu Seidu.

That change proved costly for Ghana. In the 14th minute, Suarez found space on the right and delivered a dangerous cross to the far post. Arias arrived unmarked and calmly guided his volley into the net, giving Colombia the lead they deserved.

Ghana struggled to respond with any real threat. Antoine Semenyo had an effort deflected over, but the Black Stars ended the match without a single shot on target. Across their four matches at this World Cup, they managed only four attempts on target in total, with only Iraq recording fewer.

Colombia should have won by a bigger margin. Luis Diaz missed a good chance before the break, Suarez headed wide, and Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi made an excellent save to keep out Johan Mojica’s header in stoppage time.

After the interval, Colombia continued to create openings. Richard Rios went close moments after replacing James Rodriguez, who was making his 130th appearance. Gustavo Puerta forced another fine stop from Zigi, while Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside and later saw another chance blocked by the keeper.

Colombia finished with 20 attempts and eight on target, underlining their dominance. They are now unbeaten in 90 minutes across their past seven World Cup matches and have kept three consecutive clean sheets.

Next, Colombia face Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday at 21:00 BST, with a possible quarter final against Argentina waiting beyond that. For Ghana, the exit raises serious questions after a campaign that promised more than it delivered.
