Australian cricket icon Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from international competition, bringing an extraordinary chapter of his sporting journey to a close. The 38 year old has also decided to leave domestic first class and List A competitions, although he intends to continue representing Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
Maxwell previously stepped away from One Day Internationals in June 2025 but remained part of Australia’s Twenty20 plans. His final appearance in national colours came against Oman during the 2026 T20 World Cup in February. Australia exited during the group stage, while Maxwell claimed two wickets without getting an opportunity to bat.
Speaking on the Final Word podcast, the explosive all rounder explained that discussions with Australian selectors had continued following the tournament. With the national setup increasingly focused on developing emerging talent ahead of the 2028 Olympics, he recognised that the time had arrived for a new generation.
Although Maxwell had hoped for a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, he accepted the team’s future direction. Physical recovery also influenced his decision, with ongoing knee concerns requiring rehabilitation before the upcoming BBL campaign.
Throughout his international journey, Maxwell established himself as one of cricket’s most entertaining performers. Across 130 T20 internationals, he accumulated 2,897 runs at an impressive strike rate of 154.42 while collecting 51 wickets.
His five T20 international centuries remain a joint world record alongside India’s Rohit Sharma.
Maxwell also featured in seven Test matches, scoring 339 runs, including a career best 104 against India in Ranchi.
A two time ODI World Cup champion and member of Australia’s victorious 2021 T20 World Cup squad, Maxwell leaves an outstanding legacy.
With his Melbourne Stars contract extending through the 2027 to 2028 season, supporters can still enjoy his exceptional batting skills in franchise cricket.
