Tottenham’s search for their opening Premier League goal of the campaign remains fruitless after a drab, scoreless draw with Everton at home. Roberto de Zerbi’s team have now gone four full matches, more than 400 minutes, without finding the net, and once again failed to generate any real attacking spark.
Their sharpest opportunity fell early, in the fifth minute, when Jan Paul van Hecke steered a header off target from a deep Andy Robertson free kick. Everton looked the sharper unit for large stretches, with Thierno Barry nearly breaking the deadlock when his point blank effort cannoned off goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Kinsky later redeemed a careless error, gifting possession to Kiernan Dewsbury Hall before recovering to smother his attempt.
The result leaves Tottenham 17th, just above the drop zone with only two points collected, while Everton sit seventh and remain undefeated through four rounds.
Given the club spent around £302 million rebuilding the squad this summer following consecutive 17th place finishes, expectations were high heading into the season. Instead, their only triumph across all competitions came in the League Cup against Charlton, marking their poorest league start since 2008/09. Supporters grew restless as attackers repeatedly shied away from shooting chances, and a weak effort from new arrival Mateus Fernandes drew mocking applause from the stands. Late substitute James Maddison, returning from a shoulder issue, could not inspire a breakthrough, and jeers greeted the final whistle following the stadium’s first ever goalless result.
Everton, fresh off a lively 2-2 draw with Manchester United, nearly stole victory through Brennan Johnson, whose shot flew over after a good chance. Jack Grealish made his return off the bench following his loan switch back from Manchester City, offering David Moyes fresh creative options ahead of Wednesday’s cup clash with Wolves. Spurs, meanwhile, travel to Liverpool in the League Cup next.
