Guirassy Double Guides Borussia Dortmund to Narrow Victory Over Sabah

Borussia Dortmund returned to winning form in the UEFA Champions League after securing a closely contested 2-1 victory over Sabah in Azerbaijan, with Serhou Guirassy delivering both goals for the German visitors.

Following their disappointing 1-0 loss against Bodo/Glimt in the previous round, Dortmund entered the contest determined to revive their European campaign. Their attacking intent produced an early breakthrough as Guirassy reacted sharply to a goalkeeping mistake in the 10th minute. Sabah keeper Stas Pokatilov failed to gather an initial attempt, allowing the striker to convert the loose ball.

Despite falling behind, Sabah gradually established themselves in the contest. Encouraged by their historic Champions League success against Slavia Prague, the Azerbaijani hosts troubled Dortmund with energetic attacking movements and swift counterattacks.

Their growing confidence paid off in the 39th minute when Aden McCarthy connected with a delivery from a set piece to restore parity. Sabah continued pushing forward and briefly thought they had gained another advantage, only for Joy Lance Mickels’ effort to be disallowed for offside.

Dortmund emerged from the interval with greater composure and improved control of possession. Their renewed approach eventually produced the decisive moment when Joey Veerman delivered an inviting ball into the penalty area. Guirassy demonstrated excellent technique, directing a controlled volley beyond Pokatilov to restore Dortmund’s advantage.

Both teams continued searching for opportunities during an entertaining conclusion. Guirassy and Fabio Silva failed to capitalise on clear openings that could have strengthened Dortmund’s position. Meanwhile, Sabah substitutes Orphe Mbina and Veljko Simic were unable to convert promising opportunities that might have rescued a point.

The result takes Borussia Dortmund to six points in the competition, providing valuable momentum ahead of their next Champions League fixture against Real Betis on Wednesday, November 4.
