Devin Haney has made a fresh proposal for a potential blockbuster meeting with Shakur Stevenson, suggesting that the pair compete at 145 pounds in December.
The latest offer represents a small shift from Haney’s previous position. On October 4, he publicly called for the contest to take place at the full 147 pound welterweight limit without restrictions on rehydration. His new suggestion reduces the agreed scale limit by two pounds, although his stance regarding rehydration remains unchanged.
That detail could prove crucial in negotiations. Stevenson would benefit from Haney having to cut additional weight before the official weigh in, but Haney would still be free to regain as much weight as necessary before stepping into the ring.
As a result, the physical difference between the two fighters on fight night could remain one of the major obstacles to reaching an agreement.
Haney’s latest proposal nevertheless indicates that he is prepared to compromise. The WBO welterweight champion has now identified both a specific weight and a December timeframe, giving Stevenson clearer terms to consider. Haney currently holds the WBO crown at 147 pounds, while Stevenson is the WBO champion at 140 pounds. World Boxing Association
The possibility of these two unbeaten Americans meeting has attracted considerable attention throughout 2026. Stevenson previously described a bout with Haney as his top priority, while earlier discussions included the possibility of a 144 pound catchweight. The Ring
December leaves limited time for both camps to finalise financial and contractual details. While the gap between their preferred scale limits appears to be narrowing, the rehydration condition could ultimately determine whether the contest becomes reality.
For now, Haney has made his move. The next decision belongs to Stevenson.
