Iceland Cruise Past Luxembourg With Convincing Nations League Victory

Iceland produced a composed and clinical display to defeat Luxembourg 3 0 at the Stade de Luxembourg in their UEFA Nations League Group C4 meeting on Tuesday night.

The visitors made their intentions clear from the opening stages and were rewarded in the 13th minute. Andri Gudjohnsen found the breakthrough to put Iceland ahead and give his side early control of the contest.

Luxembourg attempted to respond in front of 8,879 supporters, but Iceland continued to create the more dangerous opportunities. Their pressure paid off again before the interval when Orri Óskarsson struck in the 39th minute. That goal sent Iceland into the break with a comfortable two goal advantage and left the hosts facing a difficult second half.

Luxembourg tried to raise the tempo after the restart and searched for a route back into the game. However, Iceland remained organised at the back and limited the home side to few clear chances. Goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson and the Iceland defence protected their lead while the visitors remained threatening whenever they moved forward.

The result was effectively secured in the 73rd minute when Victor Pálsson added Iceland’s third goal. Luxembourg were unable to find a reply during the closing stages, allowing Iceland to finish the evening with a clean sheet and all three points.

The statistics reflected Iceland’s stronger attacking performance. They registered 13 shots on target compared with Luxembourg’s five, underlining the visitors’ efficiency in the final third.

For Iceland, the victory was an important response after their 1 1 draw against Estonia in their opening Nations League fixture. Luxembourg, meanwhile, entered the match after a 2 1 away win over Bulgaria but could not repeat that success at home.

Iceland will now look to build momentum as the Group C4 campaign continues after an assured performance away from home.
