India strengthened their grip over the second Test in Colombo after Dhruv Jurel’s outstanding unbeaten century helped them post a commanding 503 for 9 declared on a rain affected second day. The wicketkeeper batter produced a composed 115 from 177 deliveries, guiding India into a dominant position before their bowlers struck late in the evening session.
Sri Lanka’s reply lasted only a handful of overs before bad light forced another interruption. Debutant Kamil Mishara remained unbeaten at the crease, but India managed to remove both Lahiru Udara and nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya before play was abandoned.
The hosts were unhappy with the playing conditions, repeatedly raising concerns about the fading light. However, India made the most of the limited opportunities and ended the day with the advantage.
Earlier, Sri Lanka’s bowlers had created some pressure on a slow Colombo surface, but Jurel and Rishabh Pant shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favour. After Saransh Jain’s dismissal early in the day, Pant joined Jurel and launched an aggressive counterattack, smashing 63 off 89 balls during a valuable 112 run partnership.
Pant once again displayed his fearless approach, taking on the short ball and clearing the boundary with confidence. Meanwhile, Jurel played the ideal supporting role, rotating the strike regularly and punishing loose deliveries without taking unnecessary risks.
After Pant’s departure, Jurel continued to control the innings alongside Manav Suthar, who contributed with a 39 run stand before falling to Jayasuriya. Jurel eventually reached his century after a patient wait for the final run, surviving a close call while completing the milestone.
India quickly moved beyond the 500 run mark before declaring, giving their bowlers a chance to attack Sri Lanka’s top order. With two wickets already secured, India will enter the next stage of the match with complete control and a strong chance of pushing for victory.
