Jordan Henderson has ended his time at Brentford after the Premier League club agreed to cancel the remaining year of his contract. The decision makes the England midfielder available without a transfer fee and could allow Chelsea to move forward with their reported interest.
Brentford confirmed Henderson’s departure on Wednesday, bringing his stay in west London to a close earlier than expected. The former Liverpool captain had joined the Bees from Ajax last summer on a two year agreement, but discussions about his future were always expected after the World Cup.
Reports in Britain suggest Chelsea are considering Henderson as they look to add leadership and experience to their squad. Brighton forward Danny Welbeck is also believed to be among the senior England players being monitored by the London club.
Henderson thanked Brentford for the chance to represent them and expressed appreciation for the way the organisation supported both him and his family from the moment he arrived.
Brentford director of football Phil Giles explained that the club held the planned talks with Henderson following the World Cup, where the midfielder represented England. During those conversations, Henderson made it clear that he wanted to explore a different challenge during the closing stages of his playing career.
Giles said Brentford had previously assured Henderson that they would not block a departure if he decided to pursue another opportunity. With both parties reaching the same conclusion, the contract was ended by mutual consent.
Manager Keith Andrews also supported the decision, stating that Henderson’s personal ambitions and the current position of Brentford’s squad made this the appropriate moment for a change.
Chelsea are now free to negotiate directly with the veteran midfielder. However, no agreement has yet been announced, and Henderson’s next destination remains unconfirmed as interest in his services begins to grow.
