England kicked off their World Cup campaign with an exciting 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas, collecting three valuable points in their first Group L fixture. While Thomas Tuchel’s men looked dangerous going forward throughout the contest, their defensive vulnerabilities ensured the match remained competitive for long periods.
The Three Lions made an early breakthrough in the 12th minute when Harry Kane converted a penalty. The England captain was given a second opportunity after Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was ruled to have moved off his line while saving the initial attempt. The spot kick had been awarded following Luka Modric’s foul on Noni Madueke inside the area.
Croatia responded strongly and restored parity after 36 minutes. Martin Baturina unleashed a fierce effort that slipped beyond Jordan Pickford despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball. England quickly regained the advantage before the interval as Kane rose highest to meet Declan Rice’s corner, powering a header into the net for his second goal of the evening.

However, Croatia refused to back down. Just before halftime, Ivan Perisic nodded the ball across goal and Petar Musa guided the finish past Pickford to make it 2-2 and ensure the contest remained finely balanced.
England emerged from the break with renewed energy. Jude Bellingham justified his selection with a superb individual effort, driving forward with power before calmly finding the net to restore his side’s lead. The goal shifted momentum firmly in England’s favour as they controlled much of the second half and created several promising opportunities.
Croatia managed to stay within touching distance until the closing stages, but substitute Marcus Rashford finally put the result beyond doubt. With five minutes remaining, the forward produced a composed finish to secure England’s fourth goal and complete an impressive attacking display.
Tuchel will be pleased with the result and the quality shown in the final third. Kane joined Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland among the early contenders for the tournament’s Golden Boot race, while Bellingham delivered another influential performance on the biggest stage.
Although England’s defensive organisation still requires improvement, the victory provides the perfect foundation as they prepare for their next Group L encounter against Ghana in Boston.
